Communication and Deadlines

As much as we loved trekking to Castle Lecture Hall for our classes, it was really nice to get outside and change environments for the day! Well, not really outside, we were still in a building. On our computers. I mean, it is a STEM camp. Anyways, thanks to a few sudden changes in weather, our classes were moved to the Student Union Center. After the flurry of bags and future entrepreneurs settled into the couches and tables, a collective hum of productive energy seemed to wash over the group.

It truly is an incredible environment when you have so many talented people working toward a single goal. One of the most critical pieces of advice you’re given at Nalukai is one that echoes the temper tantrums of Steve Jobs in his prime: “Real artists ship.” We were coming down to the final forty-eight hours before our drop-dead date, and the room was electric.

Our designers were poring over a the final digitized elements of the site templates, the programmers were neck-deep in HTML and CSS files, and the rest of the group worked on creating and formatting the visual and text content to be featured on the site. Organization became critical as representatives for each group (designers, programmers, photographers, and editors) continually relayed information on the progress of the digital products we’ve been creating.

The pressure only continued to build as we realized some of our content had been overlapping across different pages. The team of editors worked for around three hours to ensure that all the content was unique and compelling. Overall, things are looking good. Make no doubt, the pressure is on! But we’ll figure everything out. Trust us. We’re the future.

Hangout with Google

Today we met with a team of some extraordinary and unbelievable people who work at Google. The group of people we met worked specifically on Google Earth, a satellite imagery site that creates terrains, 3D buildings, and more from all over the world. They taught us how everything was created, from the programming to the site, how they take the images, and even how they manage the people who are a part of the project.

However, the most important thing that we learned from them was not from their job, but rather their personal experiences. We got to ask them about how they managed to get a job at Google, what schools they went to, and what they’ve learned from their failures. The true lesson they taught us is the fact that things are not always going to go the way that you want them to. You just need to be able to understand that sometimes you have to follow your instincts and passion, and that will take you to the place that you really want to be in life.

Passionate Notes

There’s something about playing music for someone that you can’t really explain in words. It’s a mixture of trepidation, excitement, and an extreme feeling of nervousness. It’s something I’ve had to deal with since 4th grade, when I first started playing piano. Every year I play around three to five pieces for a recital that takes place in early August, so I always get a little nervous around that time. Not to mention that I have to practice every day, with no exceptions.

Today, we were conveniently located in the student union room, I decided to play the piano. Naturally, that same wave of fear and anxiety hit me before I started actually playing. At first, I was scared of getting into the middle of a piece, and then suddenly messing up. However, despite my negative feelings, I still decided to follow through with the piece.

The first two movements went pretty well. With a loud start, I got through numerous scales and cross-overs. My fingers started blazing through the keys. Everyone zoomed out of focus, and I could only concentrate on my piano. For those few minutes, I drifted out of a corporeal world, and fell into a lull of just pure sound. While it only lasted a short while, it was a time when I momentarily forgot my nerves, and everything seemed to fit right into the notes.

Beta Testing for Microsoft

the micro:bit was something entirely unique that challenged all of us to think of new ideas to use the tool to its full potential.
Microsoft is one of the biggest tech companies in the world. They manufacture computers, programs, application softwares and more. Most recently, they introduced BBC micro:bit. It can be used for making games, music, and programming robots. Nalukai students had the immense pleasure of being the first student beta testers in the USA.

The micro:bit is a unique tool that gives us nearly unlimited options to tinker with. While most students mainly used tutorials from the main site, it gave us many creative outlets to produce some fantastic work. Some made words flash across the screen, some made a game, and others even tried to make a drone. The micro:bit was something entirely unique that challenged all of us to think of new ideas to use it to its full potential.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to utilize our skills as beta testers with this product.

We've all felt excitement at some point in our lives. Whether it was when you were five and got a new toy, or if it was the moment you realized you got that job you've been wanting. Everyone has had some experience with the feeling of excitement. After a long day of collaborating, we were all ready to past out cold. Instead, Aunty Stephanie walked up to the front of the room and announces that we have a challenge ahead of us. Many of us were nervous about what would come ahead, as we thought that we were about to work out after an already tiring day.

Thankfully she announced, "We are going to be having a chopped challenge." We quickly sat up, immediately interested in whatever she was saying as it was related to food! She then went on to say that she wouldn't explain anymore until we were all back at the dorms and with our groups. We were very exited, but at the same time, nervous at what the challenge would be like. Many questions filled our mines like, was it going to be a full meal? How are we gonna cook it? What could possibly be gained from this?

Sooner than later, it was time for the challenge and we had to represent collaboration in the form of food. We worked together and created our final product to present to the judges. In the end, it was a great bonding experience and it motivated us to be creative in other forms rather than just the internet.

Chopped Challenge Awards:

Collaboration- Kiana, Sheridan, Mason, Eli, and Sophia.

Top 10 things That We Learned From Entrepreneurial Expert Eric Nakagawa

Cat memes are something everyone has come across at some point or another. While they never had a huge impact on me, they did have a huge impact on Eric Nakagawa. In fact, he managed to create an entire startup business called I Can Has Cheezburger and because of his success and experiences he came to talk to all of us at Nalukai. Through the discussion we had with him we learned many things about being entrepreneurs. Here are some of the most important things we realized while talking to him.

1. Things aren’t suppose to be great on the first try. So keep trying.

2. You have to ask for it or you won't get it.

3. Never stop reading. Keep reading and gaining as much knowledge as you possibly can.

4. Sometimes your team will go their separate ways, and other times you'll find them coming back together for a different project.

5. With the right tools you can change anything about yourself.

6. The biggest liability is time.

7. It’s not real until it happens.

8. Be in it for the end game.

9. The door might be shut but you never know if the door is unlocked unless you test the handle.

10.
You're going to miss a lot so pay attention.

No Cell Phones At the Table

Being at such an amazing camp with such great people it makes sense that we should spend less time on our phones and more time with the people around us. Yet, despite this it's still hard for all of us to just up and leave our phones.

We're so used to carrying them around; so used to whipping them open and playing a game or texting somebody when we get bored. After noticing this problem, Renezel decided to have everyone put their phones in the middle of the table. Everyone at Nalukai agreed with her idea and wanted to interact within the group. We wanted to talk to others and create better, stronger friendships.

We all came to an agreement that if we used our phones during a meal, that person would have to clean up everyones dishes. Good thing we didn't want to do that! Without our phones the students unplugged from social media but in turn connected on a deeper level.

Collaboration is Key

First day of classes! We started with 'learning through doing' the design thinking process, followed by examining digital media in its many forms with an emphasis on the importance of story. Throughout the day we started collaborating with each other and talking about both present projects and possible future projects. Doing this allowed us to learn more about each other and our different skill sets.

Later that day, we went on to our "physical activity" time and during this time we spent 20 minutes stretching and telling each other our most embarrassing moments, and demonstrating our favorite dance moves. This allowed us to see each other on a more personal level and became closer as a whole. I think one thing that we can all take away from this day is that collaborating is the key to a successful future.
